The Properties, Specifications, Monograph and Uses of Disodium Phosphate or Sodium Phosphate Dibasic:
CAS Number 10039-32-4, EINECS EC Number 231-448-7, HS Code: 28352200 28351090, Molecular Weight 358.14, Chemical Formula Na2HPO4-12H2O
Disodium phosphate (DSP), or sodium hydrogen phosphate, or sodium phosphate dibasic, is the inorganic compound with the formula Na2HPO4. It is one of several sodium phosphates. The salt is known in anhydrous form as well as forms with 2, 7, 8, and 12 hydrates. All are water-soluble white powders; the anhydrous salt being hygroscopic. It is used in conjunction with trisodium phosphate in foods and water softening treatment. In foods, it is used to adjust pH. Its presence prevents coagulation in the preparation of condensed milk. Similarly, it is used as an anti-caking additive in powdered products. It is used in desserts and puddings, e.g. Cream of Wheat to quicken cook time, and Jell-O Instant Pudding for thickening. In water treatment, it retards calcium scale formation. It is also found in some detergents and cleaning agents. For water treatment, you may ask for our Encapsulated Disodium Phosphate. Monobasic and dibasic sodium phosphate are used as a saline laxative to treat constipation or to clean the bowel before a colonoscopy.

A. Identification Tests-General, Sodium
B. Identification Tests-General, Phosphate.ASSAY
Insoluble Substances:
Procedure
Sample: Equivalent to 2.5 g of Na2HPO4
Sample solution: Transfer the Sample to a 250-mL beaker. Add 50 mL of water and 40.0 mL of 1 N hydrochloric acid and stir until dissolved.
Blank: Transfer 40.0 mL of 1 N hydrochloric acid to a 250-mL beaker. Add 50 mL of water.
Analysis: Titrate the Blank with 1 N sodium hydroxide and record the volume of 1 N sodium hydroxide consumed. Titrate the excess acid in the Sample solution potentiometrically with 1 N sodium hydroxide to the inflection point at about pH 4, and record the burette reading. Subtract this burette reading from that of the Blank and designate the volume of 1 N sodium hydroxide resulting from this subtraction as A. Continue the titration with 1 N sodium hydroxide to the inflection point at about pH 8.8, record the burette reading, and calculate the volume (B) of 1 N sodium hydroxide required in the titration between the two inflection points (pH 4 to 8.8). Where ;A is equal to or less than B, each mL of the volume A of 1 N sodium hydroxide is equivalent to 142.0 mg of Na2HPO4. Where A is greater than B, each mL of the volume (2B - A) of 1 N sodium hydroxide is equivalent to 142.0 mg of Na2HPO4.
Acceptance criteria: 98.0% to 100.5% on the dried basis.

Fire: Di Sodium Phosphate is not considered to be a fire hazard.
Explosion: Disodium phosphate is not considered to be an explosion hazard.
Fire Extinguishing Media: Use any means suitable for extinguishing surrounding fire over Di Sodium Phosphate.
Extinguishing Media Not recommended: None specified.
Special Information: In the event of a fire, wear full protective clothing and NIOSH-approved self-contained breathing apparatus with full face piece operated in the pressure demand or other positive pressure mode. At high temperatures under fire conditions, it may produce toxic or irritating fumes. Fire-extinguishing work is done from the windward and the suitable fire-extinguishing method according to the surrounding situation is used. Uninvolved persons should evacuate to a safe place.6. Accidental Release Measures
Personal precautions, protective equipment, and emergency procedures: Ventilate area of leak or spill. Avoid breathing dust/fumes/gas/mist/vapors/spray. Use individual protective equipment (waterproof boots, suitable protective clothing, safety glasses, etc.). Restrict unprotected personnel from the area. Prevent any contact with hot surfaces. Do not approach facing the wind. Do not touch the spilled material.
Environmental precautions: Do not let the product enter drains, soil, or water sources.
Methods and materials used for containment cleanup procedures and Storage: Contain spilled material. Cover with an inert, non-combustible absorbent material, (e.g., sand, earth, diatomaceous earth, vermiculite). Vacuum or sweep-up and remove to an approved disposal container. Vacuuming or wet sweeping may be used to avoid dust dispersal.7. Handling and Storage
Precautions for safe handling: Apply according to good manufacturing and industrial hygiene practices. Ensure proper ventilation. Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not drink, eat, or smoke while handling. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. Minimize dust generation. Avoid breathing dust/fumes/gas/mist/vapors/spray. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid ingestion and inhalation. Use individual protective equipment (waterproof boots, suitable protective clothing, safety glasses, etc.). Prevent any contact with hot surfaces.
Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities: Store in cool, dry, and ventilated area away from heat sources and protected from sunlight in tightly closed original container. Keep air contact to a minimum. Store protected from heat, sparks and ignition sources and incompatible materials. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhalation of dust/mist/vapor. Do not store with incompatible materials like strong oxidizing agents, strong acids, alkaloids, lead acetate, antipyrine, chloral hydrate, resorcinol and pyrogallol. Containers may be hazardous when empty since they retain product residues.8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
Airborne Exposure Limits: None established.
Ventilation System: A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures as low as possible. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of it into the general work area.
Personal Respirators (NIOSH Approved): For conditions of use where exposure to dust or mist is apparent and engineering controls are not feasible, a particulate respirator (NIOSH type N95 or better filters) may be worn. If oil particles (e.g., lubricants, cutting fluids, glycerin, etc.) are present, use a NIOSH type R or P filter. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not known, use a full-face positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator. WARNING: Air-purifying respirators do not protect workers in oxygen-deficient atmospheres.
Skin Protection: Wear protective gloves and clean body-covering clothing.
Eye Protection: Use chemical safety goggles. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.
Other Control Measures: Maintain good housekeeping in work area. Dust deposits on floors and other surfaces may pick up moisture and cause the surfaces to become slippery and present safety hazards. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Wash hands after handling.9. Physical and Chemical Properties
