Zinc sulfate or Zinc Sulphate is an inorganic compound. It is used as a dietary supplement to treat zinc deficiency and to prevent the condition in those at high risk. The most common form includes is heptahydrate with the formula ZnSO4-7H2O. It was historically known as "white vitriol". Zinc sulfate and its hydrates are colourless solids. In medicine it is used together with oral rehydration therapy (ORT) and an astringent. Zinc sulfate is used to supply zinc in animal feeds, fertilizers, toothpaste, and agricultural sprays. Zinc sulfate, like many zinc compounds, can be used to control moss growth on roofs. Zinc sulfate can be used to supplement zinc in the brewing process. Zinc is a necessary nutrient for optimal yeast health and performance.

Zinc Sulfate contains one or seven molecules of water of hydration. The monohydrate contains NLT 89.0% and NMT 90.4% of zinc sulfate (ZnSO4), corresponding to NLT 99.0% and NMT 100.5% of zinc sulfate monohydrate (ZnSO4-H2O), and the heptahydrate contains NLT 55.6% and NMT 61.0% of zinc sulfate (ZnSO4), corresponding to NLT 99.0% and NMT 108.7% of zinc sulfate heptahydrate (ZnSO4-7H2O).

ASSAY
Procedure
Sample: An amount of Zinc Sulfate equivalent to 170 mg of zinc sulfate (ZnSO4)
Analysis: Dissolve the Sample in 100 mL of water. Add 5 mL of ammonia–ammonium chloride buffer and 0.1 mL of eriochrome black and titrate with 0.05 M edetate disodium until the solution is deep blue in color. Each mL of 0.05 M edetate disodium is equivalent to 8.072 mg of zinc sulfate (ZnSO4).
Acceptance criteria:
Monohydrate: 89.0%–90.4% of zinc sulfate (ZnSO4), corresponding to 99.0%–100.5% of zinc sulfate monohydrate (ZnSO4-H2O)
Heptahydrate: 55.6%–61.0% of zinc sulfate (ZnSO4), corresponding to 99.0%–108.7% of zinc sulfate heptahydrate (ZnSO4-7H2O)

Sample solution: Dissolve the equivalent of 1.12 g of zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) in 150 mL of water contained in a 200-mL volumetric flask. Add sufficient ammonium sulfide to precipitate the zinc completely and dilute with water to volume. Pass through a dry filter and reject the first portion of the filtrate.
Analysis: To 100 mL of the Sample solution filtrate add a few drops of sulfuric acid, evaporate to dryness in a tared dish, and ignite to constant weight.

DESCRIPTION
Zinc Sulfate occurs as colorless, transparent prisms or small needles, or as a granular, crystalline powder. It contains one or seven molecules of water of hydration. The monohydrate loses water at temperatures above 238C; the heptahydrate effloresces in dry air at room temperature. Its solutions are acid to litmus. The monohydrate is soluble in water and practically insoluble in alcohol. One gram of the heptahydrate dissolves in about 0.6 mL of water and in about 2.5 mL of glycerin; it is insoluble in alcohol.
Function: Nutrient.

SECTION 4. FIRST AID MEASURES

Always seek medical attention after first aid measures are provided.
Eye Contact: Do not allow victim to rub eye (s). Let the eye (s) water naturally for a few minutes. If particle/dust does not dislodge, flush with lukewarm, gently flowing water for 5 minutes or until particle/dust is removed, while holding eyelid (s) open. If irritation persists, obtain medical attention. DO NOT attempt to manually remove anything stuck to the eye.
Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing, shoes, and leather goods (e.g., watchbands, belts). Quickly and gently blot or brush away excess chemical. Wash gently and thoroughly with lukewarm gently flowing water and non-abrasive soap for 5 minutes. If irritation persists, repeat flushing. Obtain medical advice. Completely decontaminate clothing, shoes and leather goods before reuse or else discard.
Inhalation: If symptoms are experienced, remove source of contamination or move victim to fresh air. Obtain medical advice.

SECTION 10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

Stability and Reactivity: Stable and not considered reactive under normal temperatures and pressures. Hazardous polymerization or runaway reactions will not occur.
Incompatibilities: Strong oxidizing agents. Avoid excessive heating.
Hazardous Decomposition Products: High temperature operations such as oxyacetylene cutting, electric arc welding or severe overheating will generate zinc oxide fume which, on inhalation in sufficient quantity, can produce metal fume fever. General: In the form in which Zinc Sulphate is sold it is relatively non-toxic. The major route of exposure would be through the generation and inhalation of airborne dust and especially the generation of zinc oxide fume through thermal decomposition.
Acute:
Skin/Eye: Zinc Sulfate direct contact may cause local irritation of the eyes or skin but would not cause tissue damage. Eye contact with solutions (>1%) may cause the appearance of white flecks on the lens of the eye. Dust or fume from burning or welding operations may also cause local irritation.
Inhalation: Zinc Sulphate acute inhalation may result in irritation but is not expected to cause significant harmful effects. Symptoms may include discomfort, coughing, tingling sensation, sneezing and/or shortness of breath and wheezing. Extreme heating of Zinc Sulphate monohydrate will generate zinc oxide fume. If inhaled, this fume can result in the condition called metal fume fever. The symptoms of metal fume fever will occur within 3 to 10 hours of exposure, and include immediate dryness and irritation of the throat, tightness of the chest, and coughing which may later be followed by flu-like symptoms of fever, malaise, perspiration, frontal headache, muscle cramps, low back pain, occasionally blurred vision, nausea, and vomiting. The symptoms are temporary and generally disappear, without medical intervention, within 24 to 48 hours of onset. There are no recognized complications, after affects, or chronic affects that result from this condition.
Ingestion: Zinc Sulfate ingestion of large doses can cause anemia and stomach symptoms. It is very astringent, and when ingested in excessive quantities, can irritate the stomach, resulting in abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, and spontaneous vomiting.
Chronic: In general, zinc is a low toxicity metal.
