Anhydrous magnesium acetate has the chemical formula Mg(C2H3O2)2 and in its hydrated form, magnesium acetate tetrahydrate, it has the chemical formula Mg(CH3COO)2-4H2O. Magnesium acetate is the magnesium salt of acetic acid. It is deliquescent. Magnesium acetate is commonly used as a source of magnesium or for the acetate ion in chemistry experiments.

Solubility: Freely soluble in water and in alcohol.IDENTIFICATION
A. Dissolve about 100 mg in 2 ml of water. Add 1 ml of dilute ammonia and heat. A white precipitate is formed that dissolves slowly on addition of 5 ml of ammonium chloride solution. Add 1 ml of disodium hydrogen phosphate solution. A white crystalline precipitate is formed.
B. It gives reaction of acetates.TESTS
pH: 7.5 to 8.5.
Dissolve 2.5 g in carbon dioxide-free water and dilute to 50 ml with the same solvent.
Chlorides: Maximum 330 ppm.
Nitrates: Maximum 3 ppm.
