The Properties, Specifications, Monograph and Uses of Edetic Acid EDTA:

CAS Number 60-00-4, EINECS EC Number 200-449-4, HS code 292121** or 29224990 or 29212100, Molecular Weight 292.2, Chemical Formula C10H16N2O8

Edetic Acid or EDTA is the acid form of edetate, a chelating agent with anti-hypercalcemic and anticoagulant properties. Edetic acid binds calcium and heavy metal ions, forming soluble stable complexes which are readily excreted by the kidneys. This results in a decrease in serum calcium levels. This agent is also used as an anticoagulant for blood specimens and is applied as a treatment of lead poisoning. This white, water-soluble solid is widely used to bind to iron and calcium ions. In industry, EDTA is mainly used to sequester metal ions in aqueous solution. In the textile industry, it prevents metal ion impurities from modifying colours of dyed products. EDTA is added to some food as a preservative or stabiliser to prevent catalytic oxidative decolouration, which is catalysed by metal ions. It is also used in soft drinks. In shampoos, cleaners, and other personal care products, EDTA salts are used as a sequestering agent to improve their stability in air.

ASSAY
Procedure
Standard: 200 mg of chelometric standard calcium carbonate, previously dried to 110C; for 2 h and cooled in a desiccator
Sample solution: Transfer 1.4 g of Edetic Acid to a 100-mL volumetric flask, dissolve in 11 mL of 1 N sodium hydroxide, dilute with water to volume, with cooling if necessary, and mix.
Analysis: Add 10 mL of water to the Standard, swirl to form a slurry, and cover the beaker with a watch glass. Without removing the watch glass, add 2 mL of 3 N hydrochloric acid from a pipet, and swirl to dissolve. Wash down the sides of the container, the outer surface of the pipet, and the watch glass with water, and dilute with water to 100 mL. While stirring with a magnetic stirrer, add 30 mL of the Sample solution from a 50-mL buret. Add 10 mL of 1 N sodium hydroxide and 300 mg of hydroxy naphthol blue and continue the titration with the Sample solution to a blue endpoint.
Calculate the percentage of edetic acid (C10H16N2O8) in the portion of sample taken:
Result = [W/(V x C)] x (Mr1/Mr2) x 100
W = weight of calcium carbonate (mg)
V = volume of the Sample solution consumed in the titration (mL)
C = concentration of the Sample solution (mg/mL)
Mr1 = molecular weight of edetic acid, 292.24
Mr2 = molecular weight of calcium carbonate, 100.09
Acceptance criteria: 98.0% to 100.5%

Iron: To pass the color comparison test. --- 0.005%
Limit of Nitrilotriacetic Acid: To pass the test by Chromatography.

5. Fire Fighting Measures

Fire: Not considered to be a fire hazard. However, it can burn at high temperatures.
Explosion: Not considered to be an explosion hazard.
Fire Extinguishing Media: Use any means suitable for extinguishing surrounding fire.
Extinguishing Media Not recommended: Avoid using solid water jet as it may scatter the fire.
Special Information: In the event of a fire, wear full protective clothing and NIOSH-approved self-contained breathing apparatus with full face piece operated in the pressure demand or other positive pressure mode. At high temperatures under fire conditions, it may produce toxic or irritating fumes. Fire-extinguishing work is done from the windward and the suitable fire-extinguishing method according to the surrounding situation is used. Uninvolved persons should evacuate to a safe place.

6. Accidental Release Measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment, and emergency procedures: Avoid breathing dust/fumes/gas/mist/vapors/spray. Use individual protective equipment (waterproof boots, suitable protective clothing, safety glasses, etc.). Restrict unprotected personnel from the area. Prevent any contact with hot surfaces. Do not approach facing the wind.
Environmental precautions: Do not let the product enter drains, soil, or water sources.
Methods and materials used for containment cleanup procedures and Storage: Do not inhale dust, vapors, mist, or gas. Avoid dust formation. Contain spilled material. Cover with an inert, non-combustible absorbent material, (e.g., sand, earth, diatomaceous earth, vermiculite). Use a shovel to put the material into a convenient waste disposal container. Finish cleaning by spreading water on the contaminated surface and allow to evacuate as per law.

7. Handling and Storage

Precautions for safe handling: Apply according to good manufacturing and industrial hygiene practices. Ensure proper ventilation. In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment. Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not drink, eat, or smoke while handling. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. Minimize dust generation. Avoid breathing dust/fumes/gas/mist/vapors/spray. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid ingestion and inhalation. Use individual protective equipment (waterproof boots, suitable protective clothing, safety glasses, etc.). Prevent any contact with hot surfaces.
Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities: Store in cool, dry, and ventilated area away from heat sources and protected from sunlight in tightly closed original container. Keep air contact to a minimum. Store protected from heat, sparks and ignition sources and incompatible materials. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhalation of dust/mist/vapor. Do not store with incompatible materials like strong oxidizing agents, strong bases, aluminum, copper, copper alloys, nickel.

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Airborne Exposure Limits: None established.
Ventilation System: A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures as low as possible. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of it into the general work area. Please refer to the ACGIH document, Industrial Ventilation, A Manual of Recommended Practices, most recent edition, for details.
Personal Respirators (NIOSH Approved): For conditions of use where exposure to dust or mist is apparent and engineering controls are not feasible, a particulate respirator (NIOSH type N95 or better filters) may be worn. If oil particles (e.g., lubricants, cutting fluids, glycerin, etc.) are present, use a NIOSH type R or P filter. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not known, use a full-face positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator.
Skin Protection: Wear protective gloves and clean body-covering clothing.
Eye Protection: Use chemical safety goggles. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.
Other Control Measures: Maintain good housekeeping in work area. Dust deposits on floors and other surfaces may pick up moisture and cause the surfaces to become slippery and present safety hazards. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice.
