The Properties, Specifications, Monograph and Uses of Triethanolamine or Trolamine:

Triethanolamine or Trolamine or TEA is a versatile organic chemical compound used primarily as a pH balancer, emulsifier, and surfactant across cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications. It acts as a crucial stabilizer that improves product texture, consistency, and shelf-life. It is used in beauty and skincare formulations, in serums, and heavy creams, giving them better spreadability, corrosion Inhibitor, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and Paints.

Trolamine USP NF Grade Specifications:
C6H15NO3 --- 149.19
Ethanol, 2,2',2"-nitrilotris-.
2,2',2"-Nitrilotriethanol --- [CAS 102-71-6].

Trolamine is a mixture of alkanolamines consisting largely of triethanolamine [N(C2H4OH)3] containing some diethanolamine [NH(C2H4OH)2] and monoethanolamine [NH2(C2H4OH)]. It contains not less than 99.0 percent and not more than 107.4 percent of alkanolamines, calculated on the anhydrous basis as N(C2H4OH)3.
Packaging and storage: Preserve in tight, light-resistant containers.

Identification:
A: Infrared Absorption.
B: To 1 mL add 0.1 mL of cupric sulfate: a deep blue color is produced. Add 5 mL of 1 N sodium hydroxide, and concentrate to one-third of the original volume by boiling: the blue color remains.
C: To 1 mL add 0.3 mL of cobaltous chloride: a carmine red color is produced.
Specific gravity: between 1.120 and 1.128.
Refractive index: between 1.481 and 1.486 at 20C.
Water: not more than 0.5%, a mixture of 5.0 mL of glacial acetic acid and 20 mL of methanol being used as the solvent.
Residue on ignition: not more than 0.05%.
Assay: Transfer about 2 g of Trolamine, accurately weighed, to a 300-mL conical flask. Add 75 mL of water and 2 drops of methyl red and titrate with 1 N hydrochloric acid: each mL of 1 N hydrochloric acid is equivalent to 149.2 mg of triethanolamine, expressed as N(C2H4OH)3.
