It is a white solide, highly soluble in water and has properties of cationic surfactant. Benzododecinium bromide is effective against gram-positive microbes. Longer expositions may inactivate some viruses. Benzododecinium bromide is an active ingredient in some antiseptic formulations. Benzododecinium bromide is also used as a preservative. It is is a cationic surfactant that may be used as an adsorbent for certain metals such as Cr(VI).
